The Most Venerable Jaseung issued a proclamation concerning the pope’s visit to Korea:
“This visit by Pope Francis to Korea is the time to console countless people, regardless of their religious beliefs.”
The most Venerable Jaseung, president of Jogye order, stated that “This visit by Pope Francis to Korea is the time to console countless people, regardless of their religious beliefs.”
The most Venerable Jaseung emphasized this point during his address after he met with the pope and Korean religious leaders at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul on August 18, 2014.
The full text of Venerable Jaseung’s speech during the pope’s visit is as follows:
This visit by Pope Francis to Korea is the time to console countless people, regardless of their religious beliefs. In addition, here and now we have an opportunity for our society to reflect on ourselves and look back to find hope.
In particular we would like to express sincere gratitude to the pope for offering his condolences to the Korean people for the Sewol Ferry disaster – a situation which caused suffering for everyone in this country. We were also moved by His Excellency caring for a bereaved father who had been on a hunger strike for over a month, while wearing a yellow ribbon on his chest.
The pope offered his message, “Peace on the Korean peninsula affects the stabilization of the whole world. Please engage in dialogue by listening patiently to the other side.” These words were very precious to us. We believe that the peace of the Korean peninsula begins with reconciliation and cooperation by offering mutual respect.
The pope’s message, “The church for the poor and of the poor,” must be engraved not only on the leaders of other religions but also on the leaders of our society.
Great steps will be taken not with words but the practice of compassion, love and peace for us all, just as the visit by the pope has done.
