The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism participated in the first International Forum on Global Faith and Culture held in Singapore from September 30 to October 2. Officially invited to the event are: Ven. Hyeonbong, the senior teacher of Songkwang-sa Temple, Ven. Jeongbeom, the acting head of the Jogye Order’s Special Overseas Headquarters, and Professor Hwang Sun-il, the head of Dongguk University's Department of Buddhist Studies, who also advises the Jogye Order on matters related to international exchanges
The International Forum on Global Faith and Culture is a global forum organized by the Buddhist community to seek religious alternatives to global crises and was founded under the leadership of Ven. Tampalawela Dhammaratana, who has been actively promoting Buddhism internationally. He has previously held positions such as Vice Chairman of the UN Vesak Day International Coordinating Committee, Vice Chairman of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB), and the President of the French Buddhist Union.
At this forum, over 500 participants, including representatives of not only Buddhism but also Taoism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism came together for a time of communication and harmony with the goal of promoting dialogue and understanding among different religions, beliefs, and cultures
On the first day of the forum, Ven. Hyeonbong, the head of Songkwangsa Temple delivered a presentation under the theme Stars, Awakened and Beautiful. "To co-exist in peace with other forms of life, we need to practice restraint and learn to live wisely," emphasized Ven. Hyeongong.
"I hope that the International Forum on Global Faith and Culture will be a time of harmony, sharing religious solutions to global crises and understanding each other," said Ven. Jeongbeom in his congratulatory remarks the next day. Professor Hwang Sun-il also emphasized that "all religions should work together to overcome the climate crisis, which is a global issue," concerning the past efforts of Ven. Sugeong opposing the Saemangeum project.
The forum concluded with all participants praying for world peace.
