Dharma Talk by Seon Master Jinje

True Self

 

When the owner of the house leaves this body and the last breath is taken, in a few days the body will rot. It will be cremated and buried. Bones and flesh return to the earth, the phlegm will return to the water, the breath will return to the wind, and the heat will return to fire. When we return to the original home, there is nothing to be found. However, the owner of the house, the True Self has existed before the universe was formed and will remain changeless after the universe is destroyed. When we see this directly, the path of truth is completely found within there.

 

Question: Even if we were to find our True Self, what would be different in our lives?

 

Embittered by arrogance, jealousy, envy, desire, fear, and anxiety of the ‘self,’ beings live mindlessly and die. This is the fate of ordinary beings. With foolish desire, we try to make all things our own. No matter what great university we graduated from, even if we were the president or high government official, we cannot eliminate conflictive emotions and suffering. When we get to know our true self, the conflicts of the mind disappear. All the world with this self included is one house and one body. We don’t need to make anything our own. Because we are all one being.

 

Disciple: Seon master, then what is your True Self?

Seon Master Jinje

Seon Master Jinje was born in 1934. He took monastic ordination at 21 in 1954 under Seon master Seoku as the vocation master (eunsa Sunim) at HainsaTemple. He resolved the gongan at 33 and wrote a song of enlightenment. He received official recognition of his enlightenment from master Woonbong, and inherited the dharma lineage of masters Kyeongheo, Hyewol, and Woonbong. There is a common saying in the Korean Buddhist community, “Songdam in the north, and Jinje in the south,” which means there are two great Seon masters in Korea. He served as the spiritual patriarch (joshil) of the renowned Taego Seonwon at BongamsaTemple. With his profound teachings, he has maintained the Seon lineage in the Busan area of . He always teaches that ganhwaseon (hwadu meditation) is the top practice method. He established HaewunjeongsaTemple in 1971 and Geumcheonsa Temple of Kyeongju City in 1999. He is currently the spiritual patriarch (joshil) of DonghwasaTemple. He became a member of Jogye Order’s Council of Elders in 2003. He also received the prestigious designation of Great Master (Daejongsa) from the Jogye Order in 2004.

"몸뚱이란 숨 한번 들이쉬지 못할 때 주인공이 딱 나가버리면, 사흘 이내 썩어 화장하고 묻어버려요.

 

뼈와 살은 흙으로, 대소변은 물로, 호흡은 바람으로, 따뜻한 기운은 불로 돌아갑니다.

 

본고향으로 돌아가면 아무것도 없거든.

 

하지만 주인공은 "참나"는 우주가 생기기 전에도 있었고, 우주가 멸한 후에도 항시 여여(如如)하게 있습니다.

 

이를 바로 보아야, 진리의 도가 그 가운데 다 있습니다."

 

 

질문 : 설령 "참나"를 찾은들 우리 인생에서 무엇이 달라지겠습니까?

 

"’나’라는 허세, 시기, 질투, 욕망, 공포, 불안 등에 찌들어 정신없이 생을 살다가 죽는게 중생입니다.

 

어리석은 마음에서 온갖 것을 다 자기 것으로 이루고 삼으려고 하니,

 

아무리 명문대학을 나오고, 대통령, 장관을 지내도 번뇌와 갈등은 제거할 수가 없어요.

 

’참나’를 알게 되면 이런 중생의 용심(用心:마음 씀)이 없어집니다.

 

모든 세상이 나로 더불어 한 집이요, 나로 더불어 한 몸인데, 내가 더 가질 필요가 없단 말이거든.

 

다 같이 한 몸뚱이 인데...

진제스님 : 1934년생으로 1954년 해인사에서 석우선사를 은사로 득도했다.

21살에 출가해 33살 때 공안을 깨쳐 오도송(깨달음의 시)를 읊고 경허-혜월-운봉 선사의 법을 이은 향곡 선사로부터 법을 물려 받았다.

 

높은 선풍으로 선객들 사이에서 송담 스님과 함께 남진제 북송담(南眞際 北松潭)으로 불린다.

 

한국불교의 선풍을 진작시킨 ’봉암사 결사’로 유명한 봉암사 태고선원의 조실을 지내기도 했다.

 

해박한 설법으로 영남 선맥을 우뚝 일구고 있으며 한국 전통 수행법인 간화선(看話禪)을 최상승 수행법이라고 가르친다.

 

지난 71년 해운정사와 1999년 경주 금천사를 창건했다.

 

현재 대구 동화사 조실을 맡고 있는 진제 스님은 2003년 이후 조계종 원로의원과 2004년 이후 대종사를 역임하고 있다.
