The venerable Doyoung, executive director of Missionary Activities of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism has represented Korean Buddhism in the celebration of Vesak organized by the Srilankan government.
He left Korea for Srilanka on 14th May and launched his official tour on 16th May by paying a visit to the land of "welfare Center of Jogye Order" which is presently under construction in Srilanka.
Meanwhile, venerable Doyoung visited Veyangoda elementary school near the welfare center and he willingly donated to the school development fund, a sum in the amount of 10,000 rupees for this fall behind facility and he also promised further assistance to improve educational environment through the venerable Jicheol, secretary general of Korea-Srilanka Welfare Foundation there.
On 17th May the following day, venerable Doyoung attended the International Buddhists Meeting held in BMICH International Conference Hall and he delivered remarks of appreciation on the occasion of Vesak for the various celebration events prepared in Srilanka to each representing buddhist monks from buddhist countries, Srilankan prime minister, ambassadors in Srilanka and many buddhist monks & lay people participated there.
The venerable Doyoung was invited to the Temple Tree at the Presidential Palace and had discussions with the president concerning various matters. He, then, expressed his hopes that such a natural disastor as the Tsunami would not happen again and Srilanka would be prosperous in the comforting grace and blessings of the Buddha. The Srilankan President responded by saying that he would spare no efforts to give administrative help and support for the construction of "welfare Center of Jogye Order" in Srilanka.
On 18th May, the Venerable Doyoung made a courtesy call on the spiritual patriarch of Asgiriya Order in Kandy and emphasized the steady mutual cooperation in promoting Buddhist activities between the two countries, proposing that every effort be made to strengthen the friendly ties between the Asgiriya Order and Jogye Order. He also strongly encouraged that there would be further development of mutual exchanges of the various Buddhist activities by both countries.
The venerable Doyoung then invited and encouraged some korean students studying abroad in Kandy from Dongguk University of Korea. He also worshipped at the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) where buddha’s teeth are enshrined. He completed his last official schedule here before leaving for home on the 20th May.
