On October 9, 2024, Venerable Jinwoo, visiting the U.S. for the “2024 Korea-U.S. Traditional Buddhist Culture Exchange,” met with world-renowned quantum physicist Dr. Menas Kafatos to discuss “K-Seon Meditation,” the first step in Korean Buddhist traditional practice. This meeting aimed to bridge Buddhism and science, helping modern individuals access Korean Buddhism and Seon meditation more easily.
Venerable Jinwoo and Dr. Kafatos began their discussion with the core quantum mechanics concept of “the principle of complementarity.” Dr. Kafatos noted, “The concept of the quantum vacuum in quantum mechanics shares similarities with the Buddhist idea of emptiness,” adding, “Quantum mechanics is a science that regards consciousness as important. It's something we can observe in our daily life.”
He further commented, “If we fail to let go of attachments, we remain trapped in a cycle of rebirth. In this respect, Seon Buddhism and quantum physics share profound common ground.”
