From May 6-9, 2025, the delegation from the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism attended the 20th United Nations International Vesak Day Celebration in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to promote world peace through Buddhist teachings.
The event was co-hosted by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) and the International Organizing Committee of the United Nations Vesak Day (ICDV) and held at the Vietnam Buddhist University under the theme, "Unity and Inclusivity for Human Dignity: Buddhist Insights for World Peace and Sustainable Development.” More than 3,000 Buddhist leaders, scholars, and monastics from around the world representing 85 countries attended the celebration. The Jogye Order delegation included Ven. Jeongbeom Jeong, acting head of the Overseas Special District; Ven. Deokje, director of the Social Affairs Office; and members of the International Exchange Committee, Vens. Munjong, Gyeongwan, and Deokjae. The Korean Buddhist International Network participated as well, represented by Venerables Junhan, Jeonghye, Haein, Beopyeon, and Beopyeo. Junhan, Jeonghye, Haein, Beopyeon, and Beopyeo.
“May all people of the world find peace of mind and world peace in the great compassion and wisdom of the Buddha,” said Most Ven. Jinwoo, President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, in his congratulatory remarks presented in a video. “We welcome the establishment of December 21 as ‘World Meditation Day’ by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024.” He also introduced how Korean Buddhism is leading the way in popularizing Seon meditation by holding the International Seon Meditation Summit and expressed his intention to further promote spiritual peace worldwide through meditation.
Meanwhile, Buddhist leaders from around the world who attended the event adopted the Ho Chi Minh City Declaration, which emphasizes Buddhist values, including the pursuit of sustainable development based on solidarity, inclusion, compassion, and wisdom; the promotion of world peace through inner peace; and the application of mindfulness in education and policy, integrating mindfulness into education and policy to build a human-centered and sustainable future; and, multicultural and interfaith cooperation and promoting global harmony through intercultural and interfaith dialogue.
