The International Team of the Social Affairs Office (Director: Venerable Jinseong) of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism held the ‘2025 Overseas Buddhism Seminar: American Buddhism’ at the Education Hall of Jogyesa Temple in Seoul on September 3. The seminar examined Buddhist meditation and the current state of Korean Buddhism in the United States, and explored the ways to globalize Korean Buddhism and Seon meditation.
“Spreading Buddhist culture and Korean Seon meditation globally is crucial for the development of the Jogye Order and Korean Buddhism,” said Ven. Jinseong. He added, “I hope today's seminar will help us understand trends in the U.S. and promote the globalization of Korean Buddhism.”
The seminar featured presentations on the following topics: “The Modern Transformation and Secularization of American Buddhist Meditation” by Moon Jingeon (Professor, Dongbang Culture University); “American Buddhism and Korean Buddhism in the United States” by Sung Cheonghwan (Research Professor, Dongguk University); and “A Brief Study on the Globalization of Seon Meditation” by Oh Yongseok (Research Professor, Mind and Humanities Research Institute, Wonkwang University).
