On May 18, 2025, Namkook Buddhist Temple in New Zealand held the eye-dotting ceremony to dedicate the hanging scroll to be enshrined behind the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. This ceremony, performed to consecrate newly created images of a Buddha, followed the construction of the main Buddha hall, marking the culmination of more than 30 years of prayers by the devotees of Namkook Buddhist Temple.
With the senior teacher of Namkook Buddhist Temple Ven. Subul (the abbot of Anguk Zen Meditation Center, the president of Buddhist Daily) bearing witness to the ceremony, it was officiated by Ven. Yeongsan, the former chanting master of Tongdo-sa Temple and abbot of Anguksa Temple in Changwon. More than 200 devotees attended, including Ven. Beopil, the former abbot of Namkook Buddhist Temple; Ven. Jigak, the abbot of Neunginam Hermitage in Sancheong; and Ven. Damhwarim, the abbot of Mujin Seonwon in Busan.
In his Dharma talk, Ven. Subul, the senior teacher of Namkook Buddhist Temple, urged the Buddhists living in New Zealand to “continue to practice in harmony and strive to receive the teachings of the Buddha.”
This year, Namkook Buddhist Temple is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Established in 1994 by the Korean-New Zealand Buddhist community, the temple was founded to learn and practice the Buddha's teachings.
