The delegation of the Jogye Order participated in the 19th UN International Vesak Day of 2568 BE (2024).
The Vesak Day event was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 19th to 20th, under the theme of "The Buddhist Way to Building Trust and Solidarity." The event was attended by over 2,000 Buddhist leaders and scholars from 73 countries. The Jogye Order delegation included Director of Missionary Affairs Ven. Seonup, Acting Head of the Overseas Special Distsrict Ven. Jeongbeom, Director of the Missionary Research Office Ven. Moonjong, Vice Director of the Missionary Research Office Ven. Hyean, Vice Director of Social Affairs Ven. Jinhyo, International Exchange Committee Member Ven. Gyeongwan, and Professor Hwang Soon-il from Dongguk University.
The event opened on May 19th at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU), a national Buddhist university in Ayutthaya, with welcome and congratulatory speeches from Buddhist leaders from around the world. Following the welcome speech by Somdet Phra Maha Thirachan, the chairman of the Supreme Sangha Council of Thailand, Ven. Seonup expressed gratitude in his congratulatory speech, thanking the Thai government and the UN International Vesak Committee for providing a platform for Buddhists worldwide to come together and practice Buddha's teachings.
In the afternoon, during the themed panel discussions, Ven. Jahun, a Dharma teacher from Dongguk University, gave a well-received presentation on "Mindfulness for Health and Well-Being.“
On May 20th, the "UN International Vesak Day Official Commemorative Ceremony" was held at the UN Conference Center in Bangkok. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the significance of UN International Vesak Day in a video message.
After the event, participants moved to Buddhamonthon, a Buddhist park in Nakhon Pathom established in 1957 to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of Buddha's birth, where they engaged in various activities.
Next year's 20th UN International Vesak Day celebration is scheduled to be held at the UN Headquarters in Vietnam.
