This work by Gusan, written in the semi-cursive style, uses several lines to describe the life of the Patriarch Mahakasyapa and the story of his smile in reply the Buddha holding up one flower, as retold in the story of “The Buddha's Sermon on Vulture Peak.” In this story, the Buddha held up one flower before the assembled congregation, and while everyone else simply sat in silence, Mahakasyapa broke out in a broad smile. The Buddha then said, “I have the True Dharma Eye, the Marvelous Mind of Nirvana, the True Form of the Formless, and the Subtle Dharma Gate, independent of words and transmitted beyond doctrine,” upon which he entrusted the dharma to Mahakasyapa.
