Statues of Tathagata

Originally, the term “Buddha” referred to Sakyamuni Buddha, born as Siddartha Gautama, the crown prince of the kingdom of Kapilavastu in northern India, and attained enlightenment at the age of 35. However, with the development of Mahayana Buddhism, countless new Buddha figures were introduced, resulting in many different images of Tathagatas - beings who have come or gone in accordance with the true nature of reality. Their names vary, but their appearances are almost the same, except for their mudras (hand gestures) and minor details. The most popular and frequently depicted Tathagatas in Korea are Sakyamuni, Amitabha, Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine), Vairocana, and Maitreya.
