405 Beopjusa-roi, Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, North Chungcheong Province
This temple, whose name means “place where the Buddha's teachings reside,”
is a major temple nestled in the foothills of Mt. Songnisan (lit. “mountain
removed from the secular world”). The temple preserves Korea's only
remaining five-story wooden pagoda hall named Palsangjeon (National
Treasure), as well as a number of other important national and cultural
treasures. Consequently, the temple is regarded as a living museum. As a
major center of Maitreya Buddha worship, the temple is home to a towering
bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha which was established with the support of
a number of citizens.
