Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism
Namkook Buddhist Temple
The origin of Namkook Buddhist Temple dates back to the establishment of the Korean Buddhist Association in 1994, comprising approximately 50 dedicated Buddhists in New Zealand. On July 14, 2006, the "Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Nam Kook Temple of New Zealand Charitable Trust" was officially registered with the New Zealand government. The temple's community has created the Namkook Tea Society and actively participates in events like the Korean Day festival to promote Korean culture in New Zealand. Namkook Buddhist Temple observes significant Korean traditional holidays, including Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), which involve honoring ancestors and sharing Korean traditions through cultural festivals. Additionally, the temple commemorates annual Buddhist events such as the lantern lighting ceremony on Buddha's Birthday and special prayer sessions on Ullambane (the 7th day of the 7th lunar month) and Buddha's Enlightenment Day. Currently, the temple boasts a membership of over 300 families, offering regular Sunday Dharma services tailored for adults, children, and youth.
