Master Seung Sahn, while spreading Dharma in the United States, conducted a Dharma talk with local Buddhists in the Portland area during the mid-1980s. This inspired the establishment of a temple and initiated fundraising efforts. It took a decade for Bokwangsah to acquire its current building and move from its original location at a residential home. The temple now regularly hosts around 15 attendees for Sunday Dharma services and meditation classes. Bokwangsah is dedicated to practicing the authentic teachings of the Buddha, with a mission to promote Korean Buddhism in the northwestern regions of the United States.
