Bulkwang Zen Center

Bulgwang Zen Center’s history began five decades ago when Ven. Hwigwang acquired a building believed to have hosted George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Since its establishment in 1996, it has played a crucial role for more than two decades, serving as a welcoming haven for Korean expatriates, a center for deep prayers, and a nurturing ground for Buddhist talents. Notably, the center operates a Korean Culture School, where second-generation immigrant children learn about Korean traditions and culture. Bulgwang Zen Center, which initially began as a small hall dedicated to Avalokitesvara, has experienced continuous growth and in 2009, a new Dharma Hall was constructed. The center engages in regular practices, including Dharma services, 3-day prayer retreats at the start of each lunar month, observance of Ullambane (All Soul’s Day), and 100-day winter prayer retreats. It also celebrates major Korean holidays like Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). Within the Korean-American Buddhist community, Bulgwang Zen Center is renowned for its spiritually charged energy, where sincere prayers yield results. Currently, the center hosts regular Dharma Services every Sunday, divided into segments for different groups, from adults and youth to middle and high school students, and children.
