Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism
CHOGYESA
Master Seung Sahn founded the Providence Zen Center in Rhode Island and subsequently established the Korean Buddhist Wonkaksa in Manhattan in 1975. Later, Chogyesa was formed, and in 1985, the International Zen Center branched off from it. The temple then relocated to Manhattan in 2004, thanks to the collective efforts of the four-fold community. Chogyesa's Dharma hall remains open 24 hours a day, welcoming practitioners day and night who fill the hall with the sound of sutra recitation and meditation practice. The temple holds 100-day prayer sessions during the summer and winter retreats and regularly conducts Dharma services and meditation sessions. The former emphasizes sermons on Buddhist philosophy and other general topics, drawing about 30 participants. The latter involves approximately 10 participants who engage in Seon meditation practice and discussions. Additionally, the temple offers a meditation class every third Saturday.
